Choosing the right kids costumes is something you as a parent can do or you can allow your child to choose. Given that there are new popular cartoon characters each year, it might be difficult to know what the kids like without asking your child first. Some characters will always be popular like Batman, Charlie Brown, or Superman, while others are newcomers, like Dora the Explorer or Iron Man. Others are making comebacks, such as Alice from Alice in Wonderland, as the movie was recently recreated. In other cases, kids like going as generic characters like a ninja or a pirate. They can come with a plastic sword or a toy gun of some sort.
In some cases, kids costumes need to be made because they want to be someone specific that they like from tv. If that is the case, buying fabric should not be terribly expensive. You can then by different accessories that will really complete the look and make the character recognizable. Sometimes, kids want to be a fireman or a police officer or some other career. These can be made, though there are very official looking costumes for sale and they often come with accessories like badges, helmets, and gloves.

Of course lets not forget Avatar costumes which may make a run for first place this year. Any Star Wars character will surely be liked. How about a young Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, or even a Calibos child costume. Snow White may be a little more conservative for the younger girls. You can not go wrong by getting your kid dressed up in one of a multitude of Disney costumes. Toy story's Jessie can be worn by either the little girls or the little boys, and will certainly be recognized by the other kids.
For young kids, it is always a good idea to go as an animal of some kind. Many parents love to get kids costumes for their infants that make them look like a monkey or an elephant or a tiger. You can paint their face or even match them with couples costumes to make the entire family match. Other popular ideas including dressing up as inanimate objects. Some people like to get costumes of crayons or even a large piece of pizza. A new idea is to go as a giant whoopie cushion or a Tootsie Roll. For kids, there really is no limit what you can choose.
So ask your children what kids costumes they are interested in. You may have seen them attempt to dress up last summer while playing with their friends. Maybe you could expand on whatever idea or game your child is already interested. In most cases, they will know exactly what they want to be while sometimes they are open to new ideas. Either way, they will have a great time pretending and even more fun when they finally get dressed up in their kids costume of choice and load their bags with candy and other treats.
